150 Years Ago: July 1871 July 1st Vineyard Sound Telegraph Cable - Hon. James Buffinton received an official letter on Friday from Secretary Boutwell at Washington, saying, Instructions have been forwarded to the commanding officer of the revenue steamer Moccasin to render such assistance as is necessary in relaying the Vineyard Sound telegraph cable. July 8th Attacked by Bull - Mr. Joshua S. Bowman, of West Falmouth, was attacked by a bull and seriously injured Thursday. Mr. Bowman had driven his cattle into the yard for the purpose of yoking a pair of oxen, and without any apparent cause the bull went for him, pitched him over with his horns and gored him once or twice, breaking two of his ribs, and badly bruising him. It is feared fatally. ....

It s a community fixture. “Scargo Tower, for me . it is Dennis,” said Lambton, a member of the Dennis Select Board. “That’s the most iconic image of Dennis. You get a great view. If you’re up there on a clear day, you can see from the bay . to the ocean.” But the view from the 30-foot stone tower, perched on what is considered the highest point on the mid-Cape, has been blocked over the past decade because of a lack of maintenance of shrubs, trees and other plants. ....
