Denver Could Approve Overhaul of Marijuana Rules on 4/20

Denver City Council is considering the city s biggest overhaul of marijuana regulations since the plant was legalized commercially in the state in 2012, and there s a chance it could all go through on April 20, the date of America s unofficial pot holiday.
During the April 12 council meeting, bills proposing that Denver opt into marijuana delivery, hospitality and socially equitable licensing were all moved forward after their first hearings. The proposed ordinances, submitted by the city Department of Excise and Licenses after nearly two years of stakeholder meetings, would also allow permanent to-go windows at dispensaries a temporary business adjustment during the COVID-19 pandemic and make numerous other technical changes in city rules, as well. ....

Marijuana Cultivation Workers in Denver Push for Unionization

Despite being the first state to legalize recreational marijuana, Colorado still doesn t have a certified marijuana workers union. That could change, though, if a National Labor Relations Board hearing goes favorably for a group of workers at a Denver cultivation warehouse.
After a hearing scheduled for March 11, the National Labor Relations Board will decide whether workers at a Denver marijuana grow owned by TweedLeaf will be recognized for a union certification vote with the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco, and Grain Millers Union Local 26 chapter. If the NLRB approves the move and 75 percent of the growing operation s employees vote in favor of certification, the TweedLeaf employees would become the first marijuana workers union in Colorado, after several failed attempts across the state. ....

Cannabis Consumers Debate Whether Colorado Should Keep Window Service

At a Denver City Council subcommittee meeting this week, councilmembers discussed proposals not only for delivery and hospitality programs, but for extending the online ordering and walk-up and drive-thru systems that were introduced at dispensaries during the pandemic.
Some Colorado dispensary owners estimate that online and to-go sales now account for nearly half of their customer transactions, and have expressed a desire to keep several of the new systems after the pandemic ends. The state Marijuana Enforcement Division has agreed with dispensary owners regarding to-go sales, but notes that a legislative change would be required to continue allowing online ordering at dispensaries, which is currently banned by state law; a bill proposed in the Colorado Legislature would make that change. ....

Golden City Council Interested in Recreational Marijuana Sales

Golden City Council is sniffing around the possibility of allowing recreational marijuana stores in the town of 21,000.
City staffers have been studying the potential impacts of retail marijuana sales since December, as first reported by the
Golden Transcript, and some councilmembers expect the issue to be raised officially in the next couple of months. Although not a lock, the possibility of recreational dispensaries coming to Golden is far stronger than it was seven years ago, when the first retail stores opened in Colorado.
Before a municipality in Colorado can allow recreational marijuana businesses, however, the local government must first approve them. Despite over 61 percent of Golden voters approving Amendment 64, which legalized recreational marijuana, in November 2012, Golden City Council instituted a moratorium on all recreational marijuana businesses in 2014, the same year that the adult-use industry went online in Colorado. That moratorium has stayed in p ....

Denver's Robert Gray Intersects Local Art and Cannabis

Robert Gray moved to Denver in 2017, in part for Colorado s weed. Growing up in the Midwest first Chicago and later Milwaukee he knew that being caught with cannabis in a state where the plant was illegal could come with legal consequences he didn t want to risk. He quickly found work in the cannabis industry here, first as a budtender at Starbuds, then as a sales representative and, later, a community engagement specialist at Craft Extracts, a position that introduced him to the world of marijuana marketing.
During his time in the notoriously un-diverse cannabis industry, Gray, who is Black, encountered racist behavior. He was called the N-word during his first week as a budtender, and although the incident was addressed, Gray recognized that this state s marijuana industry has a long way to go when it comes to inclusion and social equity. ....
