Renters financially hit by the pandemic as well as their landlords need to remain patient through a lull in assistance as programs to distribute new rounds of federal funding ratchet up locally, according to people focused on housing issues.
“Everybody will be in much better shape if they can hang in there a little bit longer until we have all these pieces in place,” said Lisa Stempler, Miami Valley Community Action Partnership president and CEO. “Everybody will be made whole. We’re right on the edge.” ....

Local officials react to proposed bills holding health boards accountable, terminating mask orders

Legislation has been proposed that would allow Ohio’s 88 boards of county commissioners the authority to terminate or modify any countywide order issued by a county Board of Health.
State Rep. Larry Householder, R-Glenford, introduced the legislation Thursday which he says would hold county health boards accountable for countywide health orders. If adopted by the General Assembly, a countywide order from a board of health could be terminated or modified through a simple resolution approved by a board of county commissioners.
“Unelected boards need to be held accountable by elected officials, such as our county commissioners who are chosen by the people they serve, to make decisions,” said Householder. “This bill adds a well-deserved balance between the people and the unelected board, something our state so desperately needs during t ....

A committee formed to help guide regional development with an eye toward improving opportunities for underserved and vulnerable populations has unveiled a draft four-year strategic plan to combat inequity decades in the making.

Local Officials Advocate For Direct Federal Aid To Counties

With the congressional session coming to a close, federal lawmakers are continuing negotiations on a COVID-19 relief package. Local officials have been advocating for more relief funding, including direct federal aid to counties.
In the spring, Montgomery County received over $90 million in CARES Act funding. County Commissioner Debbie Lieberman said those funds have been used for all kinds of expenses, including 911 dispatch services, PPE for the county jail, and Chromebooks for students.
“You can t look at any part of our county, our education systems, our health systems, that hasn t been affected by this [the coronavirus],” she said. “Everything has a price tag on it, and it s things that we did not budget for, clearly. With the downturn in sales tax revenue and other revenues, it s become very difficult.” ....
