Selfless seniors of APS

Albuquerque High School
“Throughout my life, my family has instilled a sense of civic duty and giving back to our community. Working with my Youth Group at the Safe House and serving food to the homeless showed me the significance of delivering compassion and love to those around me. I found happiness volunteering at Serendipity Day School and was humbled by teaching the little ones how to read and share. Although becoming Student Body President of my school during COVID has been a challenge, working alongside a dedicated officer team, we have spread positivity virtually keeping students involved and motivated. ....

'Knickerbocker' nets spelling bee win for fifth grader

The Cambridge Dictionary defines “knickerbocker” as “short, loose pants that fit tightly below the knee, worn especially in the past.”
Jared Jimenez, a fifth grader at East Elementary, wasn’t sure what the word meant when she first heard it at last week’s school district spelling bee.
But she knew how to spell it, even with the sneaky silent “k” at the front.
“I don’t know. I’m just so used to the word,” Jared later said.
By acing the spelling of that word, plus others like “testosterone,” “colonel” and “disgorge,” Jared claimed the crown for district-wide spelling bee champion.  ....

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education talked for hours Wednesday night about how the district could move forward with school reopenings, before ultimately tabling the item with plans to revisit it at a coming meeting.
Interim Superintendent Scott Elder had presented a plan that would have allowed kids to return in phases starting Feb. 22, but that wasn’t approved.
Instead, he’ll return to the board with a different route – that will likely focus on small groups of students – that would allow some kids to return to the classroom.

“I understand that (the members of the Board of Education) are not anxious at this point to return the majority of the staff without vaccines, so the parents that think all teachers are coming back, (that’s) not going to happen,” he said. ....
