The 5G single-entity conundrum

A SIGNIFICANT change is taking place in the Malaysian telecommunications landscape.
Last Friday, the government decided to take 5G off the backburner and bring it to the forefront. The rationale is that accelerating 5G will nudge the country quicker to its dream of becoming a high value-added economy and possibly a net exporter of homegrown technologies and digital solutions.
Hence, the government has taken the view that it needs to build the 5G infrastructure by itself to fuel the fourth industrial revolution and remain in the race against peers in technological advancement and attracting investments.
No doubt, the promise of 5G opens a new way for applications such as driverless cars, robotics, remote surgeries, virtual reality and the Internet of things, among others, that will change how people work, play and live. ....

Are telcos at a disadvantage with the 5G rollout?

Hot race: With the 5G spectrum being a shared commodity, it seems likely that competition will intensify in the telecommunications industry.
QUESTIONS are being raised on whether a government-led, single-entity rollout of the 5G network will put the private telecommunications companies (telcos) at a disadvantage.
While the market is awaiting further details on how the recently announced government-owned special purpose vehicle (SPV) would deploy 5G, there are two sets of thoughts on the matter.
On one hand, with the government being the sole owner of the 5G spectrum and infrastructure, telcos would not be burdened by the heavy upfront capital expenditure (capex) as compared to the 5G infrastructure being deployed individually. ....

(Reuters) - Europe’s telecoms industry needs to consolidate, Deutsche Telekom Chief Executive Tim Hoettges said on Friday, as the region’s 100 operators invest more in 5G networks at a time when revenue and profits are under pressure.
“The industry is in a dilemma that it can only escape through cost synergies,” Hoettges told a news conference, repeating earlier calls for consolidation. “I believe deeply that European consolidation is necessary.” ....
