It is with great sadness that we share the news that the world has lost a wonderful, loving, and compassionate man.  On Sunday, May 9, 2021, Jeff Mitchell passed from this earthly life after a long hard-fought battle with brain cancer.  He peacefully and comfortably crossed over while holding his wife’s hand.  
Jeff, affectionally known to his family and close friends as “Choli” or “Mitcholi”, was born in Crescent City, California on February 28, 1953, to Margaret Winnifred Syme and Cyril Stith Mitchell.  He lived in Crescent City his entire life until he left to attend Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo where he received his architectural degree.  He returned to Crescent City to establish his career and what a career he had.  His legacy is evident throughout Del Norte County and beyond in the hundreds of residential homes and building structures that started out as a blank piece of paper on his drafting table and ultimately becam ....

Taking the field: DNHS marching band returns


But now, for the first time in months, marching band is back at Del Norte High School.
“It’s marching band lite, I would call it,” said Dan Sedgwick, the music director at DNHS.
Earlier this month, Sedgwick and about forty of his students began practicing music and marching skills once again, after the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled most school activities in the fall.
“I can’t wait to get back,” Sedgwick said. “I’m stoked.”
Of course, band practice looks different that previous years, with many members wearing face masks on the field, but Sedgwick said they’re excited to be able to make it work. ....

Del Norte cross country runs strong


The Warriors opened the year with their one home meet, at the Del Norte Golf Course.
“I was proud of how the kids competed with such little amount of actual practice time,” coach Scott Lindsay said. “A few of the kids had been running in preparation for the season and it showed.”
Arcata, Fortuna and Eureka joined Del Norte in the meet, with a total of 76 runners from the schools across all the races.
“The meet went very well overall,” Lindsay said. “New protocols were set because of COVID-19, and we were able to keep the meet safe and competitive.” ....
