ANDY JACKSON/Stuff NPDC are expeting to finalise the City Centre Strategy later this year, David Langford says. “If the council had actually been talking to retailers on the main street I think it would have been a good start.” The NPDC says it is developing a City Centre Strategy, which will be in place for the next 30 years. Group manager planning and infrastructure David Langford says council has been consulting with building and business owners, retailers, developers, iwi and hapū, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Business and Retail Association. Consultation suggests people want a greener city centre, better connection between Puke Ariki Landing and the Wind Wand, more areas where people can hang out and a more family-friendly hub with a greater focus on pedestrians, cyclists, public transport and shared transport like e-scooters, Langford says. ....

Peter Nunn Peter Nunn used his phone to photograph a nearby house that had erupted into flames after a loud explosion in New Plymouth on Tuesday night. Enquiries into what caused the explosion and subsequent fire were under way, specialist fire investigator Andrew Cotter said. Cotter confirmed there had been reports of an explosion before the house burst into flames. “What we are thinking is the explosion was the start of the fire. It was pretty loud by the sounds of it. “We are still working through the investigation to establish the cause.” The blaze destroyed the cottage, which was split into two flats, and caused some damage to a neighbouring house, but firefighters had done a fabulous job preventing it from spreading further, Cotter said. ....
