Now the temperatures have dropped and those heady days of barbecues on the beach are a distant memory, it's time to look to one of the biggest joys of the cooler months: comfort food. Light, leafy meals are all very well in January and February, but now it’s time to bring on the pies, ramen and steaming bowls of pasta to console us as the days get shorter and chillier. Here are some of our favourites.

There are few people with such an extensive knowledge of meat as the exceptionally talented Dariush Lolaly of Cazador – he has hunted, learned butchery and is an absolute master of charcuterie as well as being a top chef. So when they started making pies at Cazador Delicatessen we knew they’d be the best pies around – and this latest one might just be the best yet. Ridiculously tender beef brisket, jalapenos and oozy cheese wrapped in crispy, melt-in-your-mouth puff pastry. We’ll just leave that there.

Eastern end of New Plymouth's main street is coming alive with food

And while they still run Joe’s Garage as it was, Little Glutton has gone, to be “replaced” by State Pasta and State Gelato, and Gover St Bistro, which mainly catered to functions, is now State Bistro, a fully fledged restaurant.

Maunder and Lucas opened State Bistro on Gover St last week.
“It’s felt really good to have the place open as a bistro,” said Lucas, who has a background in marketing and hospitality. “We really fell in love with it.”
Lucas said she felt the businesses were helping reinvigorate the eastern end of town, which is growing in reputation as a spot to grab a bite to eat.

Council action in New Plymouth's CBD 'can't come soon enough', retailers say

NPDC are expeting to finalise the City Centre Strategy later this year, David Langford says.
“If the council had actually been talking to retailers on the main street I think it would have been a good start.”
The NPDC says it is developing a City Centre Strategy, which will be in place for the next 30 years.
Group manager planning and infrastructure David Langford says council has been consulting with building and business owners, retailers, developers, iwi and hapū, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Business and Retail Association.
Consultation suggests people want a greener city centre, better connection between Puke Ariki Landing and the Wind Wand, more areas where people can hang out and a more family-friendly hub with a greater focus on pedestrians, cyclists, public transport and shared transport like e-scooters, Langford says.
