TAHLEQUAH â In the May 17 Community Services meeting, the Tribal Council learned that the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nationâs new construction program is continuing, and that citizens can now buy headstones for new burials through the tribe. HACN Interim Executive Director Jerri Killer said the new construction homeownership program has received bids for new units. âI have 32 new construction units, the bids have just come back and weâre getting ready to award those bids. So we should be starting on those pretty soon,â Killer said. Tribal Councilor Daryl Legg asked Killer prices of material for construction since prices have risen. ....
BELFONTE â Cherokee Nation officials on Feb. 24 joined Rural Communities Initiative Foundation leaders to cut the ribbon on the new Sallie Byrd Sevenstar Community Building in Sequoyah County.  The center is named in honor of CN citizen and fluent Cherokee speaker Sallie Byrd Sevenstar, who died in August, states a CN release. According to the release, Sevenstar was a lifelong Nicut resident. It also states that she was a retired teacher of more than 30 years and a Belfonte Baptist Church member for more than 50 years, where she taught Sunday school and led singing. She was also the first bilingual Cherokee speaker to receive a bachelorâs and a masterâs degree from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, according to the release. ....

Chief Hoskin said Cherokee Nation will consult with the Shawnee tribe concerning the culturally appropriate use of the Craig County land because of the Shawnees historic connection to the area. Credit: Cherokee Nation Deer, squirrel, rabbit, turkey, dove, quail, waterfowl and fish are abundant in the reserve lands, along with mushrooms, wild onions, wild berries, hickory nuts, wild greens and more. The land is also abundant with resources vital to Cherokee cultural beliefs and practices. “Our citizens regularly ask where they can go hunting and fishing, and now these reserves will fill that void and put to use our citizens’ Cherokee Nation-issued hunting and fishing licenses,” Deputy Chief Bryan Warner said. “We envision some of this space can also serve for teaching workshops from time to time to those beginners or less-experienced hunters or fishermen.” ....
