A man who has been in custody since 2014 for his connection to an alleged Penn Valley murder will withdraw his guilty pleas in the case, throwing the status of the case into doubt. Nathan Robert Philbrook, 37, had previously pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and felony robbery in connection with the slaying of Isaac Zafft in 2014. As part of a negotiated deal worked out between Philbrook’s legal counsel and the Nevada County District Attorney in 2018, the court had dismissed a first-degree murder charge against Philbrook. But at the defendant’s sentencing hearing on Wednesday, defense attorney David Alkire announced that Philbrook is withdrawing his guilty pleas to all charges. ....

A man who authorities say tried to have sex with a 15-year-old girl is expected to receive two years’ probation after he pleaded no contest to a felony charge of sexual misconduct. Michael Akiyoshi, 50, of Nevada County, will also perform 100 hours of mandatory community service under the terms of the plea agreement his defense attorney reached with prosecutors. Two other felony charges against Akiyoshi will be dropped as part of the plea deal, and he will not serve any time in state prison, according to Akiyoshi’s defense attorney, David Alkire. Akiyoshi pleaded no contest April 30 to one count of inducing sex through false representation, and he will be sentenced on May 28, records show. The other charges against him, that will be dismissed, were for meeting a minor for lewd purposes and having contact with a minor for a sexual offense, both felonies. A 53-year-old Flippin woman faces half a dozen felony drug and gun charges after law enforcement officers reported finding methamphetamine, hydrocodone and a defaced handgun in the travel trailer where was staying, according to an affidavit and a press release from Marion County Sheriff Clinton Evans David Alkire, an investigator with the 14th Judicial District Drug Task Force wrote in the affidavit that he was notified Jana Brigman was selling drugs at her Trailwood Terrace residence. Members of the task force, the sheriff s office, the Flippin Police Department and the Fugitive Apprehension Team of the Arkansas Department of Community Corrections went to Brigman s home March 2. ....
