Performing their duty: Great-granddaughter of slain sheriff pays her respects

Patti Brown, of Woodland, approaches the memorial placed at the site where her great-grandfather, Nevada County Sheriff David Douglass, was shot and killed in the line of duty 125 years ago while pursuing a highwayman. Brown and her husband Frank Brown were accompanied by Sgt. Andrew Liller, Sheriff Shannan Moon, and Lt. Sean Scales with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

When Sheriff David Fulton Douglass’ great-granddaughter Patti Brown visited her slain ancestor’s monument on Old Airport Road, she admits that she wasn’t quite sure how she’d feel about the visit.
But when she saw the monument to Douglass for the first time on Sunday, accompanied by her husband Frank Brown as well as several Nevada County sheriff’s officers, including Sheriff Shannon Moon, there was no doubt about the level of emotion Brown was feeling as she looked at the granite headstone dedicated to her ancestor, which sits in the midst of a heavily forested area just a few miles north of the Sheriff’s Office.

Man killed after he shot NDOT worker may have homicide ties

Jun 22, 2021 03:22 pm
RENO, Nev. (AP) — A man who died in a gun battle with officers after he shot a state transportation worker on a remote Nevada highway last week has been identified as a 34-year-old from Northern California who may have ties to a homicide there, authorities say.
Zachary Minissale of Nevada City, California, was shot last Wednesday after fleeing the scene of the shooting of the Nevada Department of Transportation worker on State Route 278 in Eureka County, Nevada Highway Patrol Lt. Eddie Bowers said Monday. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The transportation worker recovered from non-life-threatening injuries and has been released from the hospital, he said.

Report on Sage Crawford death could be released within weeks; toxicology results announced

Ariella “Sage” Crawford had marijuana in her system at the time of her death, with no signs of harder drugs in her body, authorities said.
Those toxicology results come as officials continue working on a report about whether the deputies involved in her Feb. 4 fatal shooting should face discipline for any misconduct. That report is expected to be publicly released next month, the District Attorney’s Office said.
If the report on Crawford’s death finds that the deputies who shot her broke the law, they could face criminal charges by the District Attorney’s Office. Even if the deputies involved in Crawford’s death are not charged, they could still face other penalties on the basis of the report, including disciplinary actions by the Sheriff’s Office that could include dismissal from the agency, Assistant District Attorney Chris Walsh said.

Man accused of trying to meet 15 year old will avoid prison time

A man who authorities say tried to have sex with a 15-year-old girl is expected to receive two years’ probation after he pleaded no contest to a felony charge of sexual misconduct.
Michael Akiyoshi, 50, of Nevada County, will also perform 100 hours of mandatory community service under the terms of the plea agreement his defense attorney reached with prosecutors. Two other felony charges against Akiyoshi will be dropped as part of the plea deal, and he will not serve any time in state prison, according to Akiyoshi’s defense attorney, David Alkire.
Akiyoshi pleaded no contest April 30 to one count of inducing sex through false representation, and he will be sentenced on May 28, records show. The other charges against him, that will be dismissed, were for meeting a minor for lewd purposes and having contact with a minor for a sexual offense, both felonies. As a part of his sentence, he will have to register as a sex offender with the state of California, the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office said.

Auburn man arrested after vehicle pursuit by Nevada County sheriff's deputies

A man was apprehended by law enforcement following a high-speed chase that began after he attempted to evade sheriff’s deputies in his vehicle, authorities said.
Dariyan Bahrampour, 26, of Auburn, was arrested Friday evening in South County, following the conclusion of a 19-mile long vehicle pursuit by deputies that began near the 11000 block of Rough and Ready Highway, sheriff’s Lt. Sean Scales said.
An officer had initially attempted to pull Bahrampour over in order to contact him about a restraining order. Bahrampour failed to pull off the road and instead sped away in a Nissan minivan, merging onto Highway 49 in an attempt to evade law enforcement, Scales said.

Man free on bond in sexual abuse case

A Grass Valley man accused of sexually abusing a young girl is free on $400,000 in bond, authorities said.
Ross Orin Jannings, 33, faces charges of continuous sexual abuse and sexual penetration with a child 10 years or younger. Arrested Thursday and since freed on bond, Jannings faces a potential life sentence if convicted, reports and Assistant District Attorney Chris Walsh said.
Jannings turned himself in to authorities after learning he had an arrest warrant, sheriff’s Lt. Sean Scales said.
According to Walsh, the investigation into Jannings began in February 2018. The girl had disclosed the allegations, which led an adult to contact the Sheriff’s Office. Investigators forwarded the case to the District Attorney’s Office last month.
