UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. Mother fence lizards that experience stress during pregnancy give birth to male offspring with shortened telomeres, or bits of non-coding DNA that cap the ends of chromosomes, according to a Penn State-led study. Shorter telomeres are associated with decreased lifespan in humans; therefore, the team s findings may have implications for human longevity.
Human men have shorter telomeres than women, which may partly explain why they have shorter lifespans of about seven years, said Tracy Langkilde, professor and Verne M. Willaman dean of the Eberly College of Science. Our study shows that stress experienced by mothers during gestation could further shorten the telomeres, and theref ....

Photo Essay: Postcards from the COVID-19 Pandemic

Photo Essay: Postcards from the COVID-19 Pandemic
Postcards from the milieu of the pandemic shutdown. A photo essay.
Since the mid-1980s, when I began drumming furiously and creating disheveled, Do-It-Yourself, xeroxed fanzines that covered the musical underground, my life conduit has been cramped indoor spaces. Whether dingy, claustrophobic clubs smelling like stale beer, mildew, and Lysol, full of skittering roaches too, or record stores piled with dusty, scratched LPs and dog-eared posters, I was always in the throng of stuff.
When the COVID-19 pandemic led to a shutdown in the US, seemingly overnight those spaces became hermetically sealed and off-limits, places to be feared. The invisible indoor air became suspicious: our scratchy masks seemed flimsy. Like so many, I was thrust into the museum of the streets, where the everyday sense of pop culture became heightened, pronounced, and more visible.  ....

Levels of stress hormone in saliva of newborn deer fawns may predict mortality

Levels of stress hormone in saliva of newborn deer fawns may predict mortality
The first-ever study of the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the saliva of newborn white-tailed deer fawns yielded thought-provoking results that have Penn State researchers suggesting predation is not the only thing in the wild killing fawns.
“We think the hormone offers a way to evaluate factors in the environment that affect fawns, such as disease, but are difficult to evaluate when just looking at a carcass that has been picked over by predators,” said researcher Duane Diefenbach, adjunct professor of wildlife ecology. “By then, it’s impossible to be certain what truly caused the fawn’s demise.” ....
