If you haven’t been on campus recently, you may not have noticed that the University Centre has been renamed. Now known as the Jamie Cassels Centre, after the previous president whose term ended in October 2020, the building is a stark reminder that there just aren’t many buildings at UVic named after women. In this case, the term ‘buildings’ refers to establishments with classrooms, research labs, or auditoriums, not residences. Although there is a good percentage of residences named after women compared to other buildings at UVic, residences are not as commonly interacted with by students. UVic has 86 listings on their building directory. Of those 86, 36 are named after people. Only eight include a woman’s name. Of those eight, five are residences. ....

Students attempt to convert David Turpin Building’s green roof into growing space
Rooftop garden proposal has deep roots in campus food movement
Six students in a 400-level environmental studies course are working to convert the green roof atop the David Turpin Building (DTB) into productive gardens to increase food security and build community on campus. The green roofs were included in the original design of DTB, which was completed in 2008. There is some evidence that seeds were planted years ago but the space has since been reclaimed by weeds and grass.
Ideally, the students would like to see the food served in cafeterias on campus and supplied to the UVSS Food Bank and Free Store, and envision the gardens being a community gathering space and opportunity for hands-on learning. ....

UVSS candidates should focus their promises on achievable, and badly needed, ways of supporting students –

We are about to enter the quietest UVSS election campaign yet. With on-campus chalking, in-person campaigning, slates, and cooperatives all banned during this year’s election, how will UVSS director-hopefuls attract the attention of the fickle student vote?
We’re the only newspaper that regularly reports on what’s happening at the UVSS. Our advice to this year’s UVSS hopefuls: don’t promise petting zoos. Listen to the voices of the students who are going through rough times. Advocate for the marginalized on issues where you have a chance of making a difference, and provide support for advocacy groups that already exist on campus. Fund programs that are already doing good work instead of doing pet projects. ....
