UVSS student affairs race heats up as candidate Hazam Nasir expresses reservations about sexualized violence training and advocacy groups on the board

Two candidates are vying to be the next UVSS director of student affairs. Their platforms and stances on key issues, like advocacy groups and sexualized violence, are very different. Mariel Hernández is currently a director-at-large on the board and Hazam Nasir runs the UVic Tip Instagram page.
In her platform, Hernández emphasizes a need for teamwork on the UVSS board, supporting the sexualized violence policy, and working with advocacy groups to ensure their voices are heard. Nasir wants to create a communication network for students and has previously expressed skepticism on the UVic Tip page about the sexualized violence policy. UVSS candidates should focus their promises on achievable, and badly needed, ways of supporting students –

We are about to enter the quietest UVSS election campaign yet. With on-campus chalking, in-person campaigning, slates, and cooperatives all banned during this year’s election, how will UVSS director-hopefuls attract the attention of the fickle student vote?
We’re the only newspaper that regularly reports on what’s happening at the UVSS. Our advice to this year’s UVSS hopefuls: don’t promise petting zoos. Listen to the voices of the students who are going through rough times. Advocate for the marginalized on issues where you have a chance of making a difference, and provide support for advocacy groups that already exist on campus. Fund programs that are already doing good work instead of doing pet projects. ....
