New York City will create new bike lanes on two East River bridges and close some lanes to vehicular traffic as part of a plan to expand its network of bike lanes throughout the five boroughs.
The new initiative would open bike lanes on the Brooklyn and the Queensboro bridges and is one of several new policies Mayor de Blasio unveiled Thursday night as part of his final State of the City address.
De Blasio, who’s tenure will end in December due to term limits, focused most of his speech on how he intends to spur the city’s post-COVID-19 recovery, but that was overshadowed in large part by his administration’s plans to alter the two iconic East River crossings changes that are sure to enrage motorists who use the spans. ....

SHARE:
Setting the tone for his final year in office, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio released a brief State of the City address Thursday evening, promising that the city “will come back strong and come back better” from the coronavirus pandemic. He presented a few new ideas, including a 10,000-person strong City Cleanup Corps to tend to community gardens and clean up graffiti, but the speech was devoid of the usual pomp and circumstance that has accompanied the mayor’s speech in previous years. Instead of a glamorous backdrop or theatrical flourishes, New Yorkers got a 28-minute video of de Blasio voice overs, while photos and videos from the past year flashed on screen. Here are some of the defining numbers of “A Recovery for All of Us.” ....

For his eighth and final State of the City, Mayor Bill de Blasio delivered a strange speech for strange times. The annual address focused on the city’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and offered dozens of policy ideas borne out of the crisis: vaccination goals, restoring jobs, expanding bike lanes, and reopening schools.
In the 20-minute videotaped speech, announced publicly just hours before it was broadcast on Thursday evening, the mayor sought to highlight the city’s resilience and focus on his plans to build a recovery that addresses the needs of all New Yorkers. ....
