Better serving the developmentally disabled | Pilot program helps agency's caregivers improve their skills

It hasn’t been that long ago since people with developmental or intellectual disabilities were locked in institutions and defined by negative stereotypes.
Since the Disabilities Rights Movement in the 1970s, much improvement has been made in how these citizens are educated and included with the rest of the community, but there is still a tinge of “nanny-ism” when it comes to how they are treated by caregivers.

They may have someone who will buy groceries, help them take a bath, or run errands. There are programs they can go to and have structured activities, where they are told where to go and what to do. But very few people with developmental or intellectual disabilities are included in the decision of what kind of care they receive or what they want their lives to be like. ....

Deputy Police Chief Robby Rummage was named chief of the Lexington Police on Wednesday by Lexington City Manager Terra Greene.
“I am very humbled, grateful, and excited to be the new chief of police of this community. I am at this point in my career because a lot of people have invested in me, including former chiefs, coworkers, and my family. Over the years, they saw things in me I didn’t see at the time and I really appreciate their support,” said Rummage.
The current police chief, Mark Sink, announced his retirement earlier this month, which will take effect on Feb. 28. Rummage has served as second-in-command at the Lexington Police Department since 2015 and will assume his new role on March 1. ....

Health Department taking vaccine appointments for 65 and older

The Davidson County Health Department is now taking appointments for the COVID-19 vaccinations for residents 65 and older.
Health Department officials said starting Jan. 25, the organization will begin vaccinating individuals age 65 and older as well as any 1a frontline health care workers at a clinic at Davidson-Davie Community College.
The health department began scheduling appointments on Friday, Jan. 22 at 10 am. Appointments may be made by phone at (336) 236-3096 or online at  https://www.co.davidson.nc.us/976/COVID-19-Vaccine.
The health department will take appointment until all slots are filled, but as more information about the weekly allotment becomes available they will update availability via their social media page at https://fb.watch/38tnxX25jb/. ....

It s a new year but the impact of 2020 is still felt throughout the country, even in the areas you d least expect.
Due to continued revenue shortfalls which were compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, most transportation projects by the North Carolina Department of Transportation in Davidson County and throughout the state have been delayed or rescheduled.
 “Prior to the pandemic, we were seeing the financial effect of the hurricanes, winter storms, and a lawsuit against the department. All of that, plus the drop in the statewide gas tax and car sales because of COVID contributed to the problems… We had to reprioritize all projects based on our reduction in revenue,” said Pat Ivey, NCDOT Division Engineer. ....
