The Flying Carousel of the Delta Breeze was grounded more than a year ago thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, which also prevented a planned 25th anniversary celebration of the pedal-powered carousel in Central Park last fall.
But that shut down came with a silver lining: time for the Davis Schools Foundation to make some much-needed refurbishments. ....

On May 6, the Davis Schools Foundation is participating in the region’s Big Day of Giving and raising money to support three funding priorities: mental health and counseling services, equitable educational opportunity and access, and support for educators.
During last year’s Big Day of Giving, DSF raised more than $30,000, which went toward DSF’s annual grant to the Davis Joint Unified School District and helped fund the curriculum used by DJUSD elementary and junior high counselors to promote social-emotional development, safety and student well-being (see https://secondstep.org). DSF’s annual grant, which totaled $100,000 for the 2020-2021 academic year, also helped fund mindfulness training designed to give students and educators strategies to manage stress and burnout and build resilience (see https://mindfulschools.org). ....

Early in our family’s experience in the Davis schools, we encountered a massive funding crisis. I remember how the Davis Schools Foundation stepped up to help fill the void. I was so grateful for the DSF leadership and how the community rallied in support. I knew then, that if I had the ability, I would always be a donor to DSF. I invite you to do the same by supporting DSF on Thursday, May 6, the Big Day of Giving.
Finding the positives these days can be a bit challenging. But just as in other times of crisis, I have been amazed to see our community come together to help each other through. I am awed by grand developments like the Davis-UC Davis partnership, Healthy Davis together, providing universal testing for COVID-19 as well as smaller, but still significant gestures like my daughter’s Spanish teacher leaving a small gift and note at her door during the lowest weeks in the fall. ....

I am writing this letter in support of the Davis Schools Foundation fundraising efforts. On May 6, the Davis Schools Foundation will be participating in the greater Sacramento community’s Big Day of Giving to support local nonprofits.
It has been a trying year for everyone, but as a board member of DSF, I know that DSF’s annual grants to the Davis schools are more important than ever, especially in our funding priority areas of mental health and counseling services, equitable opportunity and access, and support of our educators. My husband and I have continued to support the Davis public schools where our children received their educations, and we believe that the schools are one of things that make Davis the wonderful place it is. Donating to the schools via sources such as DSF is crucial to help support the well-being of the children and by extension the city. ....

During the Dec. 17 school board meeting, the trustees discussed the current COVID-19 situation in Yolo County, as well as the emerging plans for an eventual return to campus at some point in the future, after the health threat from the COVID virus has receded to a sufficient degree.
Leading off the COVID discussion was Dianna Stommel, president of the Davis Teachers Association, who acknowledged that due to the virus-related closure of school campuses, and the switch to distance learning (by teachers giving their lessons online, etc.) the present school year has been “difficult.” ....
