Luther College student awarded $10,000 Davis Projects For Peace grant

Luther College student Methembe Moyo ‘22 has been awarded the Davis Projects for Peace grant for his proposal named Lift As You Rise. Davis Projects for Peace was established by Kathryn W. Davis on her 100th birthday to fund selected students with $10,000 to create and build peace anywhere in the world.
I grew up in urban Bulawayo, a city in Zimbabwe, said Moyo. However I attended high school in a rural area and this is where I noticed the educational disparities between urban and rural education.
In Zimbabwe, students must pass an end-of-the-year exam before they can obtain their high school diploma. According to Moyo, 61% of 16 to 18-year-old students in rural Zimbabwe drop out of school upon failing their national examinations.   ....

Jazmin Nunez Scolari and Mia Maldonado will work with indigenous members of the Chaco region of Paraguay to create a brighter future. Diane Toussaint Mbahoze will lead a community awareness campaign centered around sex education and reproductive health in Rwanda. Mohammed Bah ’23 and Miguel Yakouma ’23 will run a program in Central African Republic aimed at diffusing a religious civil war.
Two University of Rochester sophomores have received a Davis Projects for Peace grant for a project in Africa that seeks to restore social bonds between warring religious groups.
Mohammed Bah ’23 is an international relations major from Monrovia, Liberia, and Miguel Yakouma ’23 is a biomedical engineering major from Bangui, Central African Republic. Their project is titled “The US-Bangui Peace Project: Building Peace through Capacity Development and Community Leadership.” Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the project will be conducted remotely via Zoom for three weeks in June. ....
