Fighting silent killers: A Q&A with Dr. Sandra Steingraber

Fighting silent killers: A Q&A with Dr. Sandra Steingraber
Updated May 10, 2021;
Dr. Sandra Steingraber’s life mission is to wage war against “toxic trespassers,” to use her term. It began at age 20, when she and other family members contracted bladder cancer which couldn’t have been genetic, because she was adopted. So she suspected environmental contaminants in her rural Illinois town, and her research found dry cleaning fluids in the water wells that suggested the link.
Since then, she has been a champion in the environmental human rights movement by applying scrupulous science and relentless civil disobedience.
The author of four books and the subject of two documentaries, Steingraber is best known for leading the grassroots fight to end fracking in New York State. That made her our first choice to solicit another lesson in methane the main component of natural gas which was back in the news when the US Senate restored stronger limits to its emis ....

The "palpable" fear among Asian-Americans: A Q&A with Rep. Andy Kim

The “palpable” fear among Asian-Americans: A Q&A with Rep. Andy Kim
Updated 8:34 AM;
Andy Kim is looking for character and citizenship, nothing less. He is convinced they go together, and that character manifests itself in the courage to step forward in times like these – to take the risk, to run for office, to lead amid fear and hostility and even threats of violence – because the men and women who took that same step were the bedrock for our first 244 years.
So the second-term Congressman from New Jersey’s 3rd District has formed a political action committee to recruit more Asian Americans to run for public office, and he begins his search at an extraordinary moment: Rarely a day passes that a heinous attack against someone of Asian American-Pacific Islander descent isn’t caught on video. There have been 3,800 cases of harassment and assault against Asian Americans in the past year, according to a San Francisco State University study released before the ....

Tracing the nursing home COVID tragedy to its source(s): A Q&A with watchdog Richard Mollot

Tracing the nursing home COVID tragedy to its source(s): A Q&A with watchdog Richard Mollot
Updated Mar 16, 2021;
The failure of nursing homes to keep our seniors safe during the COVID outbreak will always be New Jersey’s greatest pandemic disgrace, a perfect storm of inadequate staffing, poor infection control, equipment shortages, inept management, and oversight lapses that contributed to the loss of 8,000 lives.
But it also clarified our obligation to transform how long-term care facilities are governed and operated, treating them not like human warehouses but as an integral part of a compassionate health care system.
To get there, we checked in with Richard Mollot, the executive director for the Long Term Care Community Coalition, a non-profit group that advocates for nursing home residents. Mollot, a Montclair resident, spoke with Dave D’Alessandro of the Star-Ledger Editorial Board, in a conversation abridged for clarity: ....

Star-Ledger wins general excellence award, numerous other top honors from state press association
Updated Feb 21, 2021;
It was the eighth time in the past 11 years The Star-Ledger won the award. Journalists at NJ Advance Media provide the majority of the locally produced content for The Star-Ledger, NJ.com and other affiliated papers.
In addition to the general excellence award, The Star-Ledger also took home top honors in various editorial, advertising and photography awards with much of the coverage focused on the devastating effects the coronavirus pandemic has had on New Jersey.
“Year in and year out, we have proven that we have the best team of journalists in New Jersey,” said Kevin Whitmer, the organization’s lead editor. “The pandemic pushed our journalists to new levels of service and quality journalism. That shows in these results and the fact that millions of readers every day now rely on our work to keep them safe and informed.” ....
