It s been a tough fortnight for Australian divers as the coronavirus pandemic continues to dampen spirits ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games.
More than 40 of the country s best gathered in Brisbane last week, only to have their selection trials for the upcoming World Cup in Tokyo cancelled due to a snap three-day lockdown in the city.
Athletes were competing to secure a place on the Australian team for the event later this month  but that s also since been cancelled due to COVID-19 safety concerns. ....

Now that winter is almost behind us I would like to start planning some scuba diving trips for this year. I have already been to Egypt and wondered if you could suggest somewhere that isn’t too far away and has some good dive spots?

Meet the volunteer divers removing tonnes of toxic trash from Stockholm's waters

More than 100 volunteers are cleaning up Stockholm by pulling harmful waste out of the city s lakes and waterways.
When diver and social care worker, Frederik Johansson s friend bought a boat in 2018, he dived under to check the hull. He was shocked to discover how much waste discarded by boat owners littered the Swedish capital s waterways.
He decided to do something about it and set up a group of volunteers called Rena Mälaren, meaning clean lake Mälaren in Swedish. Their aim is to remove toxins from the lake and the Baltic Sea while encouraging people not to treat these fragile ecosystems as a rubbish dump. ....

BBC - Travel - Japan's mysterious underwater 'city'

By Naotomo Umewaka
11 March 2021
In 1987, a local diver exploring off the coast of Japan’s southern Ryukyu Islands stumbled across a startling discovery. Twenty-five metres below the surface, he spotted a series of almost perfectly carved steps with straight edges. Known today as the Yonaguni Monument, this massive 50m-long-by-20m-wide behemoth is one of the world’s most unusual underwater sites.
Nicknamed Japan’s Atlantis , the rectangular, stacked pyramid-like monument is believed to be more than 10,000 years old. Some think it’s all that remains of a long-lost Pacific civilisation, possibly built by Japan’s prehistoric Jomon people who inhabited these islands as early as 12000 BC. Others say that the site resembles natural formations elsewhere around the world with distinctly defined edges and flat surfaces, such as Northern Ireland’s Giant s Causeway, whose thousands of interlocking basalt columns were formed by a volcanic eruption mill ....
