Ethnic M’Nong villager Mary Thi Luc has been experiencing severe traumas in her backbone, shoulders and right leg since she had a road accident in 2017.
She has to stop to rest because of awful pain every time she walks 30 meters. She regularly asks for painkillers from her subparish priest to relieve her unbearable pain.
Luc, a 40-year-old mother of four, works with her husband to grow rice and coffee. They also work as daily wage earners to support their family. They suffer from a lack of food but it is not for want of trying. ....

Ancient DNA shines light on Caribbean prehistory

An international team of scientists reveals the genetic makeup of the people who lived in the Caribbean between about 400 and 3,100 years ago-at once settling several archaeologic and anthropologic debates, illuminating present-day ancestries and reaching startling conclusions about Indigenous population sizes when Caribbean cultures were devastated by European colonialism beginning in the 1490s.
About 6,000 years ago, at the start of the Archaic Age, humans first settled in the islands of the Caribbean. These individuals lived in what is now the Bahamas, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, St. Lucia, Curaçao and Venezuela. Three to four thousand years later, stone tools gave way to clay pottery and the Ceramic Age began. Another two millennia passed before Europeans sailed across the Atlantic and made first contact. ....

The Department of State is proud to support the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Operation Southern Cross as part of our efforts to build regional maritime security partnerships and counter illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the South Atlantic. The multi-month inaugural deployment of the new USCG Legend-class National Security Cutter, the Stone (WMSL 758), will strengthen cooperation and enhance security throughout the region.
In Guyana on January 9, the USCG Cutter Stone and the Guyanese Defense Force Coast Guard engaged in a series of cooperative exercises that support combatting IUU fishing, the first such operations conducted in conjunction with a new shiprider agreement ratified in 2020. ....
