LONDON
.-White Cube announced representation of Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) in a collaboration with The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum in New York.
One of the most significant artists of the 20th century, Noguchi was a future-focused idealist whose timeless work blended the ancient and the modern. An itinerant cultural synthesizer, he consistently defied categorisation, advocated globalism, and anticipated the social practice of art by several decades.
Noguchi began his career as a sculptor, yet his resolute redefinition of the art form led to a multidisciplinary practice spanning gardens, playgrounds, public projects, furniture, lighting and set design. Irrespective of the medium or platform, all of Noguchi’s works are informed by a deep connection to nature and space. ....

Becoming Isamu Noguchi: The making of a sculptor

Apr 23, 2021
Japan had a special place in the heart of the American sculptor Isamu Noguchi (1904-88), and not only because it was the homeland of his largely absent father.
From the origami paper-folding Noguchi learned as a child to the Zen gardens he studied as an adult, Japan provided the inspiration that fueled his rise into the top ranks of 20th-century art. It is therefore fitting that a large retrospective of his work, opening this month in Tokyo, credits the many ways in which Japanese culture influenced his development as a sculptor.

LONDON
.-The Magnum Gallery is presenting Morocco, an exhibition of works by Belgian photographer and filmmaker Harry Gruyaert focusing on his extensive travels to the North African country of Morocco. Gruyaert’s first trip to the country marked his colour photography ‘epiphany’. Gruyaert joined Magnum Photos in 1982. The exhibition is presented from 30 January to 2 April 2021 at the gallery and online.
While Gruyaert became fascinated by the power of colour when he first moved to Paris in the 1960s, and subsequently on his first trip to New York in 1968 where he saw the works of Pop artists Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenberg, his revelation that colour photography was his preferred medium came from his very first trip to Morocco in 1969. Reminiscent of artists Eugène Delacro ....
