Japan asked to reverse nuclear plant water plan - Newspaper

GWADAR: Fisherman from the coastal areas at a protest demonstration on Saturday affirmed their support for the fishing communities across the world and demanded that the Japanese government reverse its decision to release contaminated water from its crippled Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea.
Hundreds of local fishermen gathered outside the press club of Balochistan’s port city here to voice their concern over the Japanese authorities’ plan to release contaminated water from the destroyed nuclear plant into the sea.
Holding placards and banners inscribed with their demands and denouncing the decisions that they said would pollute marine life, the protesting fishermen asked the Japanese ambassador in Pakistan to request his government to stop the move that they said was against human rights and would affect the fishing communities in particular. ....

Toxic move radiates outrage

Japan’s plan to dump radioactive wastewater has fuelled anger among its neighbours, environmental groups and people in the Pacific Islands.
MONDAY marked the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster, regarded as the worst nuclear accident in history. But some scientists contend that the damage caused by an earthquake and tsunami to Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant 10 years ago was equally severe.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) classified both as “Level 7” nuclear disasters, as they caused massive health and environmental destruction.
The Chernobyl calamity, which killed 30 people within two weeks, was caused by the flawed reactor design and operation by poorly trained personnel. The explosion at the plant, 110km from Kiev in Ukraine, shattered the building and spewed 5% of the radioactive reactor core, dispersing the toxicity to many parts of Europe. ....

Japan s nuclear regulator today approved Tokyo Electric Power Company s (Tepco s) decommissioning plan for the four reactors at its Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant, close to the damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant.

Fukushima Daini is a four-unit boiling water reactor plant about 11km south of Fukushima Daiichi. The units entered commercial operation between 1982 and 1987. Although they experienced an emergency, the units were not damaged by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that caused the nuclear accident at the neighbouring Fukushima Daiichi plant. The four reactors have since been maintained in cold shutdown.
The company said in June 2018 that it was considering decommissioning the plant in conjunction with Fukushima Daiichi in response to local demands for a decision on the fate of the site. In July 2019, Tepco announced its official decision to decommission the units. ....
