Ambassadors tour Great Barrier Reef before UNESCO members vote on whether the natural wonder is endangered

International ambassadors tour Great Barrier Reef before UNESCO members vote on whether the natural wonder is endangered
The Australian government's Special Envoy to the Great Barrier Reef said 15 international ambassadors who toured the natural wonder were buoyed by the government's efforts to maintain the reef amid fears global warming is destroying the national treasure.

A group of 15 international ambassadors have been given a tour of the Great Barrier Reef ahead of an upcoming vote by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation on whether the natural wonder should be listed as “endangered”.
The tour comes as part of the federal government’s pushback against a recommendation from UNESCO which said the reef should be placed on the World Heritage in Danger list.

Your say: Housing and high-rises in spotlight

Landlords and real estates
I have been homeless for a year. I wasn't black-listed from my last rental but I wouldn't move out just when the first lot of COVID hit Mackay as we didn't have another place.
My mother is 80 years old and has been living in her rental for five years with my 83 year old father who had dementia and asbestosis.
Recently the owner came on an inspection with the real estate then the next day the real estate rang to say mum had to vacate by her lease's end.
Mum has always paid her rent, never had complaints and all she's asked us for is the owner to fix the blinds which she never did.

High-Rise on Airlie Foreshore – No Way
The Whitsunday Regional Council is considering an application for a foreshore high-rise development at the Port of Airlie, as high as 12 stories or more.
Our community has seen high-rise development proposals before and we have stood up and loudly shouted down these proposals.
So why does the council continue to entertain high-rise applications?
Why is the council not backing the community and its own town plan?
High-rise developments in the Whitsundays are shouted down for many good reasons.
The Whitsundays is one of the most popular tourism destinations in Australia.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Unsustainable fishing on the GBR

Unsustainable fishing on the GBR
Under-regulated fishing is putting unnecessary pressure on the Great Barrier Reef, a Reef that is already at risk from the impacts of climate change and poor water quality.
Overfishing, illegal fishing and incidental catch, alongside practices such as gillnet fishing and trawling, have a serious impact on the biodiversity and integrity of the reef system leading to a decline in reef health.
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s (GBRMPA) latest position statement on fishing lays out a series of issues.
Incidental catch of at-risk species – including dolphins, whales, dugongs, saw fish, sea snakes, turtles and some shark – was “the most significant fisheries sustainability issue” in the marine park.

LETTERS: Differing views on ongoing climate change debate

Differing view on climate change
Recently a letter spruiking the global warming (sorry climate change) alarmist mantra was published in some Queensland regional papers penned by Tony Fontes of Jubilee Pocket, Airlie Beach, in which he states, “As the driest inhabited continent, Australia already has a highly variable climate of droughts and flooding rains. This is why of all developed nations, Australia has been identified as one of the most vulnerable to climate change.”
I have a differing opinion, a pragmatist view of nature, and that is, “Nature and natural events have and will always beyond the perceived power some humans they have to control events like global fluctuation temperatures.”
