A $1m scheme to get gangsters off meth collapsed amid internal dissent over treatment methods, staff turnover and concerns that few people were being helped. Tony Wall reports. In February 2018, Florence Leota, a senior advisor in the Ministry of Health s addictions treatment team, emailed her boss, group manager for addiction Richard Taylor, over concerns about a programme to get predominantly Black Power gang members off methamphetamine. The programme, called Wakatika Ora, was being run by the Consultancy Advocacy and Research Trust (CART) – a social action group with a long history of working with gang communities, using a $920,000 grant from money seized under proceeds of crime legislation. ....

Kent, who died on December 23, aged 48, won numerous photography awards and was recognised as one of the country’s top news photographers. He was also an accomplished blues harmonica player who would join bands on stage, sometimes uninvited, and called himself the fifth Datsun, having played with the internationally renowned Cambridge-based hard rock band The Datsuns. Oranga Tamariki was informed that Nevaeh Ager was living in a drug house with a “nutter” father who was using meth, but told the caller there wasn’t enough evidence to act. A month later, Nevaeh was dead. Tony Wall reports. A month before she was murdered by her drug-crazed father, child protection services were told Nevaeh Ager, 2, was living in a suspected drug house, was rarely seen outside and her father was acting bizarrely. But Oranga Tamariki failed to act on the call from a worried neighbour, telling her to call police if “anything concerning or dangerous happens”. ....
