Date changed for Trenton Town Meeting - Mount Desert Islander

Date changed for Trenton Town Meeting
TRENTON   The meeting portion of the Trenton Town Meeting has been moved to June 12 at 1 p.m. at the ball field at the Trenton Elementary School.
Voting for the Board of Selectmen, School Committee and referendum articles will still take place on May 17 from 2–6 p.m. at the town office.
Initially, the open half of Town Meeting was scheduled for May 18, but at its April 20 meeting, the selectmen discussed setting an alternate date due to the state allowing an increase in the number of people permitted at public gatherings after May 24.
When voters go to the ballot box on May 17, they will elect two selectmen. Charles Farley Jr. is running for one of the two open seats along with incumbents John Bennett and Carlene Hanscom.   ....

Recognizing academic excellence despite COVID pressures

Kinston/Jones Free Press (kfp)
On Friday, April 23, I attended an induction ceremony at Trenton Elementary School for six new members of the school’s National Elementary Honor Society. I went chiefly because my grandson Alex was taking part in the induction ceremony. Last year, Alex was inducted. This year he had one of the lead roles in inducting this year’s honorees.
The National Elementary Honor Society originated in early April of 2008. This organization’s goal is “to provide meaningful and authentic student recognition for outstanding elementary students,” according to an article by the National Association of Elementary School Principals announcing the birth of the organization. In fact, the NEHS offers the same type of honor for elementary students that the National Honor Society has bestowed upon high school students since its founding in 1921. ....

Public hearing in Trenton draws quiet crowd - Mount Desert Islander

Public hearing in Trenton draws quiet crowd
TRENTON   Only one comment was made at the town’s public hearing Tuesday night, which was over in a matter of minutes.
Open to the public via Zoom videoconferencing, the hearing drew in several virtual participants and was held to discuss three referendum articles slated for the town’s warrant, one of which being whether Trenton should declare itself a Second Amendment sanctuary town.
Municipalities around the country have declared themselves “sanctuaries” as a way for local governments to oppose potential gun control measures that some see as unconstitutional.
In part, the proposed resolution states, “The Town of Trenton wishes to further express opposition to any law that would unconstitutionally restrict the rights of our citizens to peacefully keep and bear arms.”  ....
