ACAP Encourages Boaters To Slow Down For Wildlife

Following the recent death of a harbour seal in Sea Dog Cove, the Atlantic Coastal Action Program is asking boaters to slow down for wildlife.
Liane Thibodeau, a citizen scientist who monitors Sea Dog Cove for ACAP, noticed a dead harbour seal had washed up on the beach near her home from a suspected propeller strike.
Sea Dog Cove is located between Summerville, N.B. and Kennebecasis Island.
Roxanne MacKinnon is the executive director for ACAP Saint John.
“She reached out to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and they did confirm it was a propellor strike that ended up killing the seal and it washed up very close to her house. She sent us an email to let us know and to spread the word,” MacKinnon said. ....

Landmark Developer Agrees To Pay $160K For Rainbow Park Improvements, Bus Shelter

Saint John Common Council has officially approved the Landmark building, a 180-unit apartment complex overlooking Tin Can Beach.
The city has rezoned the lot allowing high-rise construction, after the developer agreed to pay $160,000 in improvements to nearby facilities.
$130,000 of those funds will go toward improvements at Rainbow Park on Sydney Street.
Of the remaining funds, $10,000 is for construction of a bus shelter on Broad Street, and $20,000 is earmarked for Tin Can Beach beautification.
Council documents show the priorities for the Rainbow Park funds include: an updated master plan, repairs to the basketball court, enhanced landscaping, and funding for an outdoor ice surface. ....

Council Begins Approval Process For Landmark Building

Saint John Common Council has begun the process to approve the Landmark development, slated for construction next to Tin Can Beach.
The 180-unit apartment complex overlooking the harbour requires rezoning from a Major Community Facility to High-Rise Residential.
Council passed the first of two readings of the required rezoning and permit variances Monday to allow the Landmark development to begin construction at 300 Sydney Street.
Jonathan Rasenberg of Coldwell Banker says they envision big things for the area.
“We see this project as a catalyst for development and improvement in the Tin Can Beach area,” he said. “We think there’s a lot more opportunity there.” ....
