Assessing Damages in Data Privacy and Data Breach Class Actions Involving Health Data in the Wake of COVID-19
Monday, March 15, 2021
The COVID-19 pandemic, which has generated a surge in telehealth and introduced the concept of contact tracing into our daily lives, is likely to expose businesses and governments to an increased risk of data privacy and data breach class actions related to health and other personal data. This article discusses potential economic approaches and challenges to valuing, in class action settings, alleged unconsented use or misappropriation of health and other private data generated during this health crisis.
Class action litigation related to data privacy and data breaches in the healthcare industry is expected to trend upward in the COVID-19 era ....

Acoustic Graphene Plasmons Study Paves Way for Optoelectronic Applications

Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology
– The first images of mid-infrared optical waves compressed 1,000 times captured using a highly sensitive scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope. –
KAIST researchers and their collaborators at home and abroad have successfully demonstrated a new methodology for direct near-field optical imaging of acoustic graphene plasmon fields. This strategy will provide a breakthrough for the practical applications of acoustic graphene plasmon platforms in next-generation, high-performance, graphene-based optoelectronic devices with enhanced light-matter interactions and lower propagation loss.
It was recently demonstrated that ‘graphene plasmons’ – collective oscillations of free electrons in graphene coupled to electromagnetic waves of light – can be used to trap and compress optical waves inside a very thin dielectric layer separating graphene from a metallic sheet. In such a configuration, graphene ....

Record-high Arctic freshwater affecting marine environment and Atlantic Ocean currents

Freshwater is accumulating in the Arctic Ocean
A simulated red dye tracer released in the Arctic Ocean shows freshwater transport.
Freshwater is accumulating in the Arctic Ocean. The Beaufort Sea, which is the largest Arctic Ocean freshwater reservoir, has increased its freshwater content by 40% over the past two decades. How and where this water will flow into the Atlantic Ocean is important for local and global ocean conditions.
A U.S. National Science Foundation-funded study by researchers at the University of Washington, Los Alamos National Laboratory and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows that this freshwater travels through the Canadian Archipelago to reach the Labrador Sea, rather than through the wider marine passageways that connect to seas in Northern Europe. The study was published in Nature Communications. ....
