Tesla’s Autopilot software, an advanced driver assistance feature, is in the news again. And not in a good way.
Over the weekend, a short video of a person sitting in the back seat of a driverless Tesla operating on public roads in California caught the internet’s attention. The six-second video shows a man staring out the window from the back of the Tesla that’s driving down the road. There’s nobody in the driver’s seat. California Highway Patrol said it was searching for the man behind the “unusual incident.” The man was later arrested. ....

The Alliance For Automotive Innovation is clearly addressing Autopilot and FSD with them.
The crash that killed two men in Texas allegedly with no driver gave Tesla heavy scrutiny and backlash. The latest one came as a document called Level 2 Driver Monitoring Principles, published by the AAI (Alliance For Automotive Innovation). The first principle says that “The Level 2 system name should reasonably reflect the functionality of that Level 2 system and not imply greater capability.” That sentence has Autopilot’s name all over it.
The following one goes in the same direction by stating that “the Level 2 system information, including promotional materials, should reasonably reflect the functionality of the system.” In other words, it should not promise more than it can actually do. This one applies like a glove to ....

Alliance for Automotive Innovation releases driver-monitoring safety principles amid Tesla crashes

DETROIT The Alliance for Automotive Innovation has unveiled several safety principles related to driver monitoring in vehicles with driver-assist systems as part of a public statement by major U.S. auto makers to ensure the technologies are safely and effectively used.
The principles focus on effective ways to determine appropriate driver engagement while educating the public on the benefits and limitations of driver-assist features.
The auto trade association s effort to address driver monitoring comes after reports of Tesla vehicle crashes around the country some of which have involved the electric vehicle maker s Autopilot driver-assist system.
U.S. safety regulators at NHTSA have investigated 28 Tesla crashes to date 24 of those cases remain active. ....
