To the Editor: Gardiner’s Bay Country Club (GBCC) seeks to construct for its seasonal workers: a 40-bed staff building and a second structure with four one-bedroom and two two-bedroom apartments, accommodating up to 64 people (see story, page 11). Given the AA Residential zoning, the Town Board would have to issue a special permit. At the ZBA hearing on May 26 at 7:30 p.m., residents should urge that: (1) an independent consultant study any environmental risks involved; and (2) if the expansion is found not to impose undue risks, the Board condition any approvals on GBCC, such as: (a) setting aside some apartments at rates affordable for year-round Island workers, including town employees and EMS and Shelter Island Fire Department volunteers; and (b) following more environmentally friendly practices. ....
An evening of Bliss Bliss Morehead (Credit: Charity Robey Photo) “It’s time to stow the snow boots and give spring a great big hug,” said the late Bliss Morehead, in anticipation of a previous April poetry reading at the Library, a program she founded more than a dozen years ago to celebrate National Poetry Month. And boy, am I grateful I got to join the herd last Friday. On an island with one doctor, one pharmacy, and no urgent care, let alone a hospital, the swift and efficient immunization of about 20% of the population in one day was a miracle. Persistent and effective town leaders, three days of round-the-clock efforts from Town employees and community volunteers, followed by the crackerjack nursing team from Stonybrook Southampton and Eastern Long Island hospitals pulled it off. ....
(Credit: Steve Wick) Although there was a notice of COVID-19 vaccine being available at Stony Brook, the reality for Shelter Islanders remains that nothing is close and with more than 400 people registering their desire to get the vaccine on the Police Department’s Code Red site, only 60 so far have received the vaccine, Supervisor Gerry Siller told the Town Board at its Wednesday work session. There are still 383 people signed up who have not managed to get inoculated, he said. In terms of eligibility, no matter which groups are currently allowed to be inoculated, there is not a flow of vaccines to the East End towns, Mr. Siller said. Eligibility won’t matter until there is vaccine, he said. ....
