Private education colleges reliant on international students will be thrown a $53 million lifebuoy in next month’s budget as closed borders stem the inflow of new students.
News of the support package comes just two days after two newly insolvent colleges were referred to the federal government’s Tuition Protection Service, which will reimburse students their fees and find alternative education providers.
Private education colleges will receive $53 million in the federal budget.
With no significant numbers of international students expected to enter the country until 2022, the package of measures will encourage private colleges to refocus their business models on local students and expand their online and offshore course offerings.

The latest Brisbane lockdown could push more firms over the edge as dwindling cashflows, particularly in the hospitality sector, exacerbated their already weak financial position.
A total of 44 Queensland firms entered either liquidation or administration in March, a 22 per cent increase on the 36 insolvencies in February, amid the end of JobKeeper subsidies and debt moratoriums.
A total of 40 companies went into liquidation over the past month and administrators were appointed to four companies.
