Oil and natural gas industry contributed $46.1 billion to Colorado's GDP in 2019, industry report says | Kiowa County Press

The
report, which was prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers, found that for every one job created in the industry, nearly four indirect jobs were created. Of the 340,000 total jobs, 69,000 were direct and 271,000 were indirect, the report said, while $34.1 billion in labor income was paid in 2019.
Experts in the field expect natural gas consumption in 2022 to outshine consumption in 2019. One primary reason for this is increased travel as COVID-19 restrictions are slowly lifted.
As more and more Coloradans return to their normal lives, demand for natural gas and oil has come roaring back, nearing its pre-pandemic heights, Granger said. Now more than ever, it is incumbent upon policymakers at the local, state and federal levels to support the continued safe and responsible development of Colorado s ample energy resources. ....

Protections sought for Upper Pecos watershed in northern New Mexico

Ralph Vigil s farm in Pecos, New Mexico depends on the Pecos River as it has for 13 years, the same river that runs across almost the entire eastern side of the state, crossing its southern border with Texas in the southeast corner.
What happens in the headwaters of the Pecos where Vigil grows vegetables like lettuce and tomatoes has a direct impact, he said, on the rest of the river – even hundreds of miles south cities like Roswell or Carlsbad.
Our watersheds are extremely important to a lot of our traditional communities in New Mexico. The health of that watershed is vital, Vigil said.  If we don’t have healthy watersheds, we don’t have healthy communities beneath them. ....

Ask Eartha: Support legislation to reuse grey water

Ask Eartha
Dear Eartha, My neighbor keeps a bucket at the bottom of their tub while they shower to collect water that they use in their garden. Does that really make a difference?
You hear a lot about recycling from High Country Conservation Center. Summit County recycles aluminum cans, glass bottles, mattresses, and the list goes on. What about recycling water?
As Colorado’s population grows, so does the demand for clean water. The state’s population has boomed to over 5.7 million and is projected to increase to 7.8 million by 2040. All this growth adds stress to our local rivers that are already stressed due to climate change and drought. This is a complex issue, so how can any one person help? ....

Trump-era rule easing water protections takes effect in state after court action

A Trump administration rule reducing what streams and other waters are subject to federal environmental protections takes effect in Colorado today, following an appeals court action on a legal challenge to the rule by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser.
Last year the EPA and Army released the Navigable Waters Protection Rule, governing protections of what are referred to as “waters of the United States” under the Clean Water Act. It cut back the reach of what waters are covered under the law. The rule applies protections in cases such as traditional navigable waters, perennial and intermittent tributaries to those waters, and some wetlands, lakes and impoundments. But it provides exemptions in cases such as groundwater, ephemeral streams that flow only due to rainfall, many ditches, and waters pertaining to prior converted cropland. ....
