Fine Gael Midlands-North-West MEP Colm Markey says the Government should introduce a new bank holiday later this year to thank volunteers for their tireless efforts during the pandemic. According to an Ipsos MRBI survey, commissioned by Volunteer Ireland, as many as three out of every four people volunteered in Ireland in some way during the emergency. MEP Markey argues Ireland has nine public holidays, which is among the lowest out of EU countries, and the extra bank holiday would give the Irish public a well-earned break. ....
New Kilkenny Volunteer Centre will tap into the great spirit of volunteerism in the county Reporter: ); The great spirit of volunteerism in Kilkenny is set to grow with the launch of the Kilkenny Volunteer Centre. A new centre will link those in Kilkenny who would like to volunteer their time with the groups and organisations that need the support. The Kilkenny Volunteer Centre is part of a national structure of 29 centres affiliated to Volunteer Ireland, and a registered charity. Officially launching the new centre and website, Salena Grace, manager of the centre, told Kilkenny councillors that the centre will keep a database of volunteering vacancies that people can see on their website, and they can offer advice and support to people who want to volunteer. ....
The Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu is celebrating National Volunteering Week this year by having tea on the forecourt of the Mansion House with volunteers from all over the City. Every day this week the Lord Mayor has been entertaining guests, socially distanced, outside the house, as a way of saying thank you for all the volunteers’ hard work. The Mansion House has been closed during Level 5 restrictions, but as soon as restrictions were eased the Lord Mayor extended an invitation to Dublin City Volunteer Centre’s volunteers to come and visit her. New Volunteer Centre will serve the community in Offaly Reporter: ); ); THE opening of the new Offaly Volunteer Centres was officially announced by Joe O’Brien TD, Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities on Monday last, the first day of National Volunteering Week. The Offaly centre of one of seven which will serve the people of Kilkenny, Leitrim, Laois, Offaly, Roscommon, Waterford and Wexford, meaning there is now a volunteer centre in every county. Volunteer Centres are supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development to provide a placement service between individuals and groups who want to volunteer and organisations that are seeking to involve volunteers. They also provide training, Garda vetting, advice and supports to volunteer organisations.
