Under the weight of a suspected avalanche, a massive chunk of ice and frozen mud broke away from a glacier in the high Himalayas and fell into a lake that had formed at its snout due to climate change. The moraine around the lake collapsed and a flash flood came roaring down the Rishi Ganga river in Uttarakhand, India, on the morning of February 7. Over a day later, more than 152 people working inside tunnels to build two hydroelectricity projects downstream were still missing; 25 have been rescued and ten bodies found. Mud inundates the project sites, and teams are still trying to open up the tunnels. One large and ten smaller bridges have been washed away. ....

NEW DELHI: Around 178 people are reportedly missing at state-run NTPC Ltd’s 520 MW Tapovan Vishnugad hydropower project site, after a glacier near Raini village above Rishiganga river in Uttarakhand burst on Sunday.
While the flood hit the Rishiganga small hydropower project, with around 40 people reportedly missing there, the flow and debris from the river merged with that from the Dhauliganga river and damaged the under-construction Vishnugad hydropower project of India’s largest power generation utility in the Tapovan area.

Uttarakhand glacier burst: Over 70 labourers from UP missing after Chamoli tragedy

Lucknow: More than 70 labourers from six districts of Uttar Pradesh, working at the Tapovan Vishnugad Hydropower Project, are reported missing after the Chamoli glacier burst hit their project site.
Family members of these missing persons are worried and have approached the district and state administration to help them know their whereabouts whether or not they are dead or alive.
Maximum number of people reported missing are from Lakhimpur Kheri. The District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar said that over 65 people from different villages had gone to Tapovan to work in the power project as labourers. While about 15 have so far contacted their families, there is no news about the rest of them, he added. ....
