Virtual Play The Picture Of Dorian Gray Woefully Fails Its Source Material

April 1, 2021 Watching the virtual theatrical production of “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” I wondered if anyone involved in the show had ever read the novel. Director Tamara Harvey and writer Henry Filloux-Bennett profoundly fail to understand one of the greatest novels ever written, butchering the characters’ arcs and themes to create a convoluted, confusing product. “The Picture of Dorian Gray” is a co-production between five theater companies across England and Wales: Barn Theatre, Lawrence Batley Theatre Huddersfield, New Wolsey Theatre, Oxford Playhouse, and Theatr Clwyd. Audiences of the prerecorded production receive a link that provides access to the play for 48 hours. Tickets are available online through April 17, but I’d advise skipping this one if you value competent storytelling or have any affection for Oscar Wilde’s novel.

The Picture of Dorian Gray - Barn Theatre

The Picture of Dorian Gray – Barn Theatre | Review March 17, 2021 Last updated: March 17, 2021 “ The coronavirus has been such a disaster for theatres up and down the country,” Lady Narborough (Joanna Lumley) tells The Interviewer (Stephen Fry) in this adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, possibly one of the most contrived lines in an online production over the past year, and yet it is undeniably true. The level of collaboration the Barn Theatre in Cirencester has done with other venues is impressive – the production team alone also includes people from the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield, the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich, the Oxford Playhouse and Theatr Clwyd in Mold, north-east Wales.

Running online until March 31 It seems a match made in heaven – or possibly the perfect deal done with the devil – to turn Oscar Wilde’s timeless tale The Picture of Dorian Gray into a 21st century allegory for the dangers to be found in the bewildering world of social media.
