One month after the deadly shootings in Atlanta, the University of Nebraska-Lincolnâs OASIS hosted a virtual Stop Asian Hate Vigil to spread awareness about the increase of hate crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. Tamayo Zhou and Meena Pannirselvam, graduate students studying educational administration, were the main organizers of the event hosted by the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services, which took place Friday night via Zoom because of inclement weather. âWe believe itâs an important matter that everyone needs to be a part of it,â Zhou said.  Pannirselvam said the event is important now because not many people are taking initiative on what she says is a needed subject. ....
Brother2Brother is hosting a symposium for University of Nebraska-Lincoln men and nonbinary students to discuss mental health, money management and masculinity. The event will take place Friday, April 23 from noon to 3 p.m. via Zoom, although Michael Sanders, a sophomore computer science major and the vice president of Brother2Brother, said it is still undecided whether there will be an in-person component. According to Tamayo Zhou, a graduate student and Brother2Brother coordinator, anybody on campus that identifies as male or nonbinary is allowed to participate in the event, but all attendees must register by 9 a.m. on April 23rd. ....
Emotions ran high Saturday afternoon as members of the community from all backgrounds gathered at the Nebraska State Capitol to protest Asian hate. âWe are not a virus,â protesters shouted in the streets as they marched in solidarity. âNo Hate in Our Stateâ and âHate is Not Born it is Taught,â signs were held high during the protest. Before the march began, University of Nebraska-Lincoln students and protest organizers Tania Castillo and Diane Choi introduced Christy Yang and UNL graduate student Tamayo Zhou to speak to the crowd about personal experiences and hate they have received.
