During a conference hosted by Rep. Henry Cuellar, leaders in the region gathered to discuss the current situation regarding the pandemic and also to receive millions in funding through American Rescue Plan allocations.
According to Cuellar, millions will be allocated to local school districts, Webb County, Laredo, El Cenizo and Rio Bravo. According to the U.S. Department of Treasury, there will be guidelines detailed and relayed to recipients regarding the use of funds and its deadline.

Last year on March 11, the U.S. officially declared the pandemic had arrived and communities throughout the nation had undergone a transformation due to the fear and uncertainty surrounding COVID-19.
For students, much work had to be done to ensure that their future would not be hindered by the pandemic. With hopes that the situation could be addressed before students returned, education leaders worked to adapt to the changes.

TAMIU announced on Thursday that its criminal justice degree ranked among the nation’s 50 best degree programs as well as that the university police department being recognized by the Texas Police Chiefs Association Law Enforcement Recognition Program the first agency in Laredo to earn the status.

Lamar principal wins administrator of the year award

Lamar Middle School principal Eduardo Lopez was nominated as a finalist and won the 2020-21 Texas Computer Education Associations Campus Administrator of the Year Golden Apple last week.
The award is given to innovative and engaging educators who understand the importance of technology throughout districts.
Lopez told LMT that he was happy to hear the news that he was nominated by a number of Lamar Middle School teachers. Despite the cancellation of the traditional in-person TCEA convention, a virtual ceremony was held for the finalist of the award.
Lopez has been the principal at Lamar since 2018. Before taking up the position, he worked as an assistant principal at J.W. Nixon High School. Additionally, he earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and a master’s in educational administration from TAMIU.
Spirit of Laredo and School Bell Award competitions to begin

The Laredo Chamber of Commerce Education Committee announced the launch of the third annual Spirit of Laredo student video competition and the educator annual School Bell Awards competition.
Both competition applications have a deadline in April. Students interested in the Spirit of Laredo competition will have until April 16 to submit their entry. Educator nominee applications for the School Bell Award will need to be submitted before April 12 at 5:30 p.m. to be eligible.
