After a full year of interruptions and expenses as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic impacting the local school districts, an additional stimulus package was slated to be provided to districts across Texas but has since been delayed at the state level.
According to the American Rescue Plan stimulus funding package, LISD and UISD are expecting to receive $115,268,000 and $126,222,000, respectively. These funds would have compounded the federal funding districts expected to receive last year that were instead used by the state throughout its budget to soften the impact of the pandemic and not on school districts.

Last summer, health officials across the country worried how COVID-19 and flu season would interact, and the likelihood of more deaths due to co-infections of both viruses.
However, largely due to the preventative measures taken to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, flu cases fell dramatically last season.
In Laredo, there were no reported co-infections with COVID-19 and the flu, and the number of confirmed flu cases in the 2020-2021 season fell by over 99% from the year prior.
During the 2019-2020 flu season, 6,389 flu cases were reported in Laredo. In the 2020-2021 season, there were only 20 reported cases of the flu.

Last year on March 11, the U.S. officially declared the pandemic had arrived and communities throughout the nation had undergone a transformation due to the fear and uncertainty surrounding COVID-19.
For students, much work had to be done to ensure that their future would not be hindered by the pandemic. With hopes that the situation could be addressed before students returned, education leaders worked to adapt to the changes.

During the LISD regular board meeting, the board trustees discussed a number of topics including a hybrid instruction during testing days, their missed school waiver as a result of the winter storm and other topics of interest.
According to the presentation regarding the hybrid instruction, students between kindergarten and eighth grade who are not scheduled to test during STAAR exam dates may be transferred to a remote learning day to reduce the number of individuals on campus.
The Texas Education Agency stated that the waiver applies for testing days including the STAAR, TELPAS online assessments, PSAT-8 and ACT Aspire. They said the dates would be limited to a maximum of five days per administration, but districts are expected to be flexible to utilize other methods to lessen the impact on students.
