Area pupils earn real stars for testing | News, Sports, Jobs

NAMING STARS John Gregg Elementary students are naming stars as a reward for performing well on their Star Reading and Math assessments. Students’ names are listed on boards near the school office, and Principal Tammy Burchfield randomly selects four pupils to participate. “This is the second year for the program,” said Principal Tammy Burchfield. “We have four winners, and they will receive a certificate with a star’s location and get to name the star.” ....

John Gregg Elementary recently raised $218 through a 1970s-themed dress-up day activity to benefit the school playground. Fifth-grader Sydney Newburn, pictured here in her groovy getup, came up with the idea to add more equipment and the event was held April 7. Principal Tammy Burchfield said the school does hold free monthly dress-up days for morale, but Newburn’s idea was more of a special occasion.

UNIQUE DISPLAYS â John Gregg Elementary custodian Fred Stine took the time to brighten up the school with his unique displays. From holiday to jungle themes, Stineâs creations delight students and capture their imagination while educating them in the process.
BERGHOLZ When Fred Stine looks at the empty display case at John Gregg Elementary, he sees a blank canvas.
The school custodian, who has been with the Edison Local School District for six years and most recently served at Edison High School, has filled the case with colorful and well-crafted designs since taking on his latest role last year. From holiday themes to the current jungle exhibit, Stine says he likes giving the kids something exciting to view while also educating them in the process. ....

Edison Local school board discusses remote learning, bus routes | News, Sports, Jobs

BERGHOLZ– The Edison Local Board of Education held its final session for 2020 with remote learning and busing issues topping the list of discussion.
The school district entered into fully remote learning on Wednesday due to COVID cases and quarantines and the plan will remain in place until students return from their holiday break on Jan. 4, while leaders discussed the move during its regular meeting on Wednesday at John Gregg Elementary.
“We based it on the number of positive cases and quarantines, and I think at the end of the day it was a good decision because during the last three days numbers increased,” said Superintendent Bill Beattie. “Hopefully, everyone will stay safe so they can come back to school in January.” ....
