WALTHAM, Massachusetts: American aerospace manufacturer Raytheon Technologies has been awarded a contract worth nearly $2 billion to develop and manufacture a nuclear-armed cruise missile to assist the US Air Force in modernizing its aging nuclear arsenal.
The missile, which is likely to be completed by February 2027, will replace the Air Force s air-launched cruise missile, which was first fielded in the early 1980s, Raytheon said.
The cruise missile will be built in Tucson, Arizona.
The U.S. Air Force is planning to purchase up to 1,000 Raytheon cruise missiles, which would likely be carried by B-52 bombers and the new B-21 Raider, Bloomberg News reported.
