Accused in hit-and-run case held in Kasaragod

A 35-year-old man, who is the accused in a hit-and-run case that led to the death of a retired school teacher while he was on his morning walk, was arrested from Kasaragod.
The accused, Moidheen Kunhu, a resident of Vidhyanagar in Kasaragod, who was arrested in a sandalwood smuggling case, revealed his involvement in the hit-and-run case during police interrogation.
The victim, Balakrishnan, 72, was killed at 5.30 a.m. on April 23 near Chekiyatkavu Papas Hotel in Mayyil.
According to the police, the accident took place when the accused was returning to Kasaragod after visiting Mattanur in connection with sandalwood smuggling. He fled the spot without stopping his vehicle after the incident. ....

Deforestation of mangroves is continuing unabated in Kannur district.
Kannur is blessed with large tracts of mangrove forests spread over government and private lands. However, large-scale felling of mangroves was recently noticed in private lands at Pattuvam, Ezhome, Cherukkunu, and Kandakali in Payyanur. The land is now being used for Kaipad and shrimp farming. ....

ECI pegs voter turnout at 74.06%


Figures on postal ballots still awaited
Updated data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) has pegged the voter turnout in the April Assembly polls in Kerala at 74.06%.
Of the total electorate of 2,74,46,039 in the State, 2,03,27,893 exercised their franchise on April 6. The commission has released the State and Assembly constituency-level data on Saturday. The present data denote the votes polled through the EVMs on the poll day. The figures on postal ballots are awaited.
In all, 98,58,842 male electors, 1,04,68,936 female electors and 115 transgender electors cast their votes, according to the updated figures.
Among the Assembly segments, Kunnamangalam (81.52%) and Kuttiadi (81.30%) registered the highest turnout. Six other constituencies Taliparamba (80.94%), Dharmadam (80.22%), Koduvally (80.05%), Kunnathunad (80.99%), Aroor (80.42%) and Cherthala (80.74%) topped the 80% mark. ....

Congress demands re-polling in Taliparamba

KPCC working president K. Sudhakaran has demanded re-polling in the Taliparamba constituency, where he said, the CPI(M) had captured booths and indulged in violence.
Speaking to mediapersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Sudhakaran said that the UDF was demanding re-polling after considering the fact that polling had not taken place in many panchayats in a fair manner.
The Taliparamba UDF candidate, P.V. Abdul Rashid, had written to the Election Commission demanding re-polling in the constituency, he said.
Mr. Sudhakaran said that while there was booth capturing and violence in Taliparamba, there was widespread use of fraudulent votes in Dharmadam where the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was contesting. ....
