Gregory Rec/Staff Photographer The city of Portland has hired an out-of-state firm to do an internal affairs investigation of the Portland Police Department’s response to an anti-racism demonstration held in June. Clifton Larson Allen LLP, headquartered in Minneapolis, is expected to review the department’s response to a demonstration that began on June 1, 2020, and ended early the following morning. Some Portland city councilors had asked for an independent review of the police response, in which officers used riot gear and pepper spray and made over 30 arrests over two days. ....

Racial equity panel hears concerns about police influence, no-knock warrants The Racial Equity Steering Committee will have public comment next at its Jan. 14 meeting. Share PORTLAND The Racial Equity Steering Committee last week heard concerns about police overreach and a suggestion to prohibit no-knock warrants. Resident Joey Brunelle told the committee, which is due to bring its recommendations to the City Council by the end of January, that he is concerned about the Portland Police Department’s relationship with people with power in the city. He specifically cited Chief Frank Clark’s recent request that the department have access to both the external cameras at Preble Street’s proposed homeless service center and to internal cameras in its courtyard. ....
