Tahoe Institute for Natural Science releases new Nature Activity book

The Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) has released its latest Tahoe Nature Activity Book. It will be distributed to every student in Grades 3 through 5 in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District and made freely available to other schools and districts in the Truckee-Tahoe region. The book helps enhance the current science curriculum with fun and challenging activities centered around the natural wonders of Lake Tahoe. Topics include “How to Draw A Western Tanager,” “Tahoe’s Rockin’ Geology,” and “Tahoe at Night.”
“We’ve been really deliberate about making sure that the content lines up with Next Generation Science Standards and the topics that Tahoe teachers are actually covering in their classrooms,” says TINS co-founder and executive director, Will Richardson. “It’s just one of the many ways we hope to help assist Tahoe educators, while inspiring a love of the natural world in children.” ....

Even in winter bugs are out at Lake Tahoe

Where do bugs go in the winter? Most disappear … but not all of them.
Have you ever looked at fresh snow and atop the fluffy surface and saw little black dots? Assuming it is dirt, you almost peer away, until the little dots begin to move and jump on the snow … These are snow bugs.
All the tiny, black dots are snow bugs.
Bugs and insects are ectothermic, meaning their internal temperature fluctuates according to its surroundings.
When winter hits in Tahoe, different bugs utilize a variety of strategies to withstand the winter, typically disappearing from sight. For example, certain species of dragonfly migrate away from the cold temperatures to a warmer location. Other insects, such as the Western Yellow Jacket, die off, except for the queen who overwinters locally by burying herself in the ground. ....

Hand-feeding birds at Chickadee Ridge is a tradition for many Tahoe visitors. But while the popular trailhead serves as a great introduction to the outdoors, officials say feeding the chickadees could be detrimental to the birds’ welfare.
Local tourism promoters and casinos tout the joys of feeding the birds at Chickadee Ridge on their websites. The popular snow play area and hiking trail even boasts its own Facebook page showing people hand-feeding birds.
But “the birds have become so habituated that even if you hold out your hand without something in it, they will still come and land in your hand. Which is not the best thing because they are still wild animals,” said Jessica Wolff, urban wildlife coordinator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife. ....
