George dissents from Commissioners Court on COVID-19 relief budget vote

Despite outcries from Fort Bend County Judge KP George and calls to action from local nonprofit leaders, the Fort Bend County Commissioners Court voted 4-1 May 4 to approve the county’s allocation of more than $157 million in state and local COVID-19 relief funds apportioned from the federal American Rescue Plan Act (APRA).
The funds are to be split between 2021 and 2022, according to the budget, which is a draft dated April 29 and was the most recent version of the document available per George’s communications director Tami Frazier.
George posted a statement on Facebook last Wednesday in response to the vote, calling it a “haphazardly constructed plan” and “without an iota of community involvement.”  ....

Stafford-based nonprofit gets storm relief donation

On March 29, locally based Attack Poverty received a $100,000 donation from Reliant Energy to help Fort Bend County s ongoing recovery efforts from Winter Storm Uri.
According to a news release from Reliant, the donation is aimed at helping to provide funding for plumbing and construction repair costs for 20 damaged homes in Fort Bend County, ensuring they are safe and secure as families continue to recover.
“The reality is that most of us were impacted somehow by the recent winter storm and likely know someone in need of home repair. As we connected with community members through food distribution lines and home assessments, the scale of damage caused by Winter Storm Uri became apparent,” Attack Poverty CEO Brandon Baca said in a news release. “As we mobilize resources in the communities we serve, we believe that we are better together through collaborative partnerships like that with Reliant.” ....
