Robert Whiting's Life Comes Full Circle with Tokyo Junkie

Journalist and author Robert Whiting uses his latest book,
Tokyo Junkie, to recall his life as an American living in Japan and the transformations he witnessed in the nation he has long called home. Whiting weaves Japanese history into the stories he tells of his own experiences. His writing recounts the city’s massive transformation from post-war devastation to a gleaming beacon of progress and hope, then later dramatic cultural shifts due to the economic bubble bursting, the 2011 tsunami, and the build-up to the delayed 2021 Olympics.
The book is arranged chronologically, beginning with Whiting’s arrival in Tokyo in 1962. As an American GI stationed at Tachikawa Air Base, Whiting was fascinated by the city. Few Americans ventured beyond the comfortable confines of the base, but Whiting took advantage of the opportunities, as Tokyo was a city in the midst of transformation. ....

Their names will be organized by rank and respective branch of service, demonstrating how the war’s burden fell unevenly across the military. ....

Targeting Tokyo: Would North Korea Nuke Japan?

A nuclear attack on Tokyo would kill tens of thousands.
Here s What You Need to Remember: Tokyo could be struck by multiple nuclear weapons, but North Korea has more targets than weapons at this point, and multiple strikes are unlikely. North Korea would also have Japan’s layered ballistic-missile defenses, consisting of SM-3 interceptors on Aegis destroyers backstopped by the Patriot PAC-3 missile system, to contend with.
Tokyo has a population of 13.491 million, making it by far the largest city in Japan and home to more than 10 percent of the nation’s population. The greater Tokyo area, home to thirty-seven million, is the largest urban area on the planet. It is also squarely in the crosshairs of North Korea’s nuclear weapons. In the event of nuclear attack, Tokyo could experience enormous destruction the likes of which it hasn’t experienced since World War II. ....
