Hitters streaks of homering in consecutive games By JohnW53 on May 8, 2021, 4:48am CDT + Only the Yankees (16,350) and Giants (14,804) have hit more. The Cubs have hit at least 1 homer in as many as 17 consecutive games. They have homered in at least 10 straight games 5 games in a row. Intriguingly, neither have the Braves, who had hit the fourth most total homers, 14,047. Nor have the Dodgers, Phillies or Reds. That makes 5 of the 8 National League teams that existed before 1962. The record for all 5 teams is 5. . On the other hand, the Padres had a streak of 6 by Graig Nettles in 1984. Morgan Ensberg homered in 6 straight games for the Astros in 2006, when they still were in the NL. ....

After 3 innings at the Union Grounds, the White Stockings, as they were known then, led, 14-1. But they barely hung on to win, 14-12. I described that game in detail in a previous post. Then I wondered how the Cubs had fared on other significant anniversaries of that historic win. Here is what I found: ....
A week ago in this space your humble correspondent prattled on at length about the Red Sox/Yankees playoff game of 1978, in my opinion the best baseball game I ever saw. As luck would have it, I had the good fortune to moderate a panel discussion with old Red Sox and old Yankee players held less than 48 hours before baseball shut itself down due to the coronavirus. Representing the Yankees were Bucky Dent, Goose Gossage, Graig Nettles, and Mickey Rivers, all of whom played key roles in that game. On the Red Sox side were Luis Tiant, Bill Lee, Bernie Carbo, and Wade Boggs. Tiant and Lee were both on the 78 Red Sox, Carbo had been traded to Cleveland earlier that season, and Boggs, the baby of the group at age 61, didn t reach the majors until 1982. Needless to say, the playoff game was a major topic of discussion. ....
