Community leaders continue push for San Diego County to support federal policing bill

SAN DIEGO
Community leaders on Wednesday urged the county Board of Supervisors to pass an anticipated resolution in support of a sweeping federal police reform bill named after George Floyd.
“I call on our supervisors to do what is right,” the Rev. Shane Harris, a civil rights activist, said during a news conference outside the County Administration Building.
The Board of Supervisors will decide Tuesday whether to direct the chief administrative officer to support the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act on the county’s behalf.
Among several reforms, the legislation would ban chokeholds, racial profiling and qualified immunity, a court-established concept that shields police officers and other government officials from lawsuits except in cases in which officials violate “clearly established” constitutional rights. ....

'Dad, I don't want to die.' Father recounts harrowing, controversial SDPD traffic stop

The San Diego Police Department said the body-camera footage shows the officer did not point his gun at the child; the boy’s father felt otherwise, according to the video
Police spokesman Lt. Shawn Takeuchi said Wednesday in a statement that “the officer never pointed his firearm at the child and maintained his aim at the vehicle.”
The body-worn camera footage shows that as the boy began to walk toward police following their commands, the officer appeared to aim his gun to the left of the car, on the opposite side from where the child exited.

DA: No criminal charges for La Mesa police detective who shot protester in head with beanbag round

SAN DIEGO
The La Mesa police detective who fired a beanbag shot at a 59-year-old protester that left her partially blind during a riot last spring will not face any criminal charges, the District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.
A review of evidence concluded that Detective Eric Knudson was acting reasonably in defense of himself and others when he fired the round during a melee, mistakenly believing that protester Leslie Furcron had thrown a rock. Her attorney said it was an empty can of Red Bull. Authorities said video confirmed the object was a can.
The findings are laid out in a 25-page letter released Wednesday and signed by District Attorney Summer Stephan. ....
