Religion scholar Maria Lichtmann felt a strangeness overcome St. Elizabeth of the Hill Country Parish in Boone, North Carolina, four years ago. Fr. Matthew Codd, the then-pastor at St. Elizabeth s, was joined by a group of seminarians who went through the church s theology library and removed books deemed heretical, including those of spiritual writers Henri Nouwen and Thomas Merton. The books were later burned, she was told by a parish staff member. Lichtmann, a retired religious studies professor at Appalachian State University, left the region in part, she told NCR, because of the changes in the parish. She now lives in Georgia. ....

Formerly chaplain at the University of Connecticut,Antonelle is the newly installed pastor of St. Mary Church in Portland, which he oversees in the company of Patsy, his pet Boxer. ....

Its first pastor, Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, was a prominent abolitionist and brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” ....

Various ministries across the Diocese of Brooklyn adapted to new norms amidst coronavirus safety protocols, including limiting church capacity, wearing masks, and socially distanced seated in the pews. For Filipinos celebrating “Simbang Gabi,” or “Mass at Night” at the Queens Village church, the adjustment meant a scaled-down version of its traditional celebration.
