Longtime Bethel Resident Joseph Conte Sr., 76, has Died

Joseph Carl Conte Sr., age 76, of Bethel, CT, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 28, 2021 with his loving wife Linda (Knapp) Conte by his side.
Joseph was born in Norwalk, CT on February 24, 1945, the son of the late Carl and Madeline (Schiano) Conte. Joe grew up in South Norwalk surrounded by loving family and friends and enjoyed reminiscing at family reunions, sharing treasured memories about the fun times and mischievous antics he and his cousins enjoyed. Being raised in a traditional Italian neighborhood was a treasured memory for Joe which contributed greatly to the hard-working, ethical man that he was. Joe was enthusiastic about life and put 100 percent into everything he endeavored. He put himself through Central Catholic High School in Norwalk, CT and was captain of the football team. He graduated from Central Catholic High in 1963 and joined the Air Force, serving two tours of duty in the Vietnam War as a flight engine ....

Sometimes I think the only reason
City Weekly runs nonlocal submissions like the April 8 letter America Unchurched is so the staff can warm their hands over the flame war they imagine will erupt on Facebook, but I ll bite.
Thomas Knapp spends the first half of his letter pointing out that church attendance is declining. Then comes this: As a libertarian, I m inclined to see the hoary hand of the state behind all bad things, and I can make a case for that here. See the trick there? With this sentence the writer simply takes it as a given that the decline in church attendance is in fact a bad thing. Yet, he offers no evidence or perspective to justify such a conclusion. ....
