Many thanks to Keweenaw County Sheriff Curt Pennala for getting the discussion going about mental health and the need to improve the system here in the state of Michigan.
A recent vehicle crash is what prompted Pennala to post on his department’s social media site. A young person from Pennala’s community had slammed a vehicle into a stand of trees at nearly 100 mph. The cause of the crash was this young driver’s decision to die by suicide.
The attempt failed and the person driving the car had their physical wounds tended to, but after a mental assessment was found not to be a danger to themselves and was sent home. Sent with them was a “safety plan.” ....

EAGLE RIVER Sheriff’s deputies recently responded to a young person who had driven a vehicle into a stand of trees at an unidentified location at nearly 100 mph, according to a post on the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office social media page.
The post stated the cause of the crash was that the young person had decided to commit suicide. ....

(AP) — An Upper Peninsula sheriff in Michigan’s smallest county is making a public plea for more mental health services after a young driver smashed a car into trees to try to end a life.
A Facebook post, with a photo of the crumpled car, has been shared more than 6,000 times this week. That s more than three times the population of Keweenaw County. The young driver survived the crash and was sent home with a “safety plan.”
Sheriff Curt Pennala says, “This does not sit well with us!” The sheriff says he s not knocking Copper Country Mental Health Services. Pennala says the public must demand a meaningful discussion about Michigan s “broken mental health system.” ....
